Used Games Rumors – Xbox 720 VS PS4

Published On February 27, 2013 | By Rebecca Foran | News, Platforms, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360

There still hasn’t been any confirmation with either Microsoft or Sony whether the new Xbox 720 and PS4  consoles will be able to play used games. however plenty of rumors are flying about. Microsoft seem to have a rather negative attitude towards pre owned games according to an interview with the Eidos President, Ian Livingstone, speaking to MCV India:

“With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on any other.” – Eidos President, Ian Livingstone

How this would work is a bit unclear as surely Microsoft would take a huge hit and possibly lose a lot of customers. Understandably, a middle ground needs to be found to ensure money goes to the right people rather than the retailers reaping in crazy profits from selling these used titles.

On the other hand, in regards to the PlayStation 4, Michael Denny, Sony Worldwide Studios VP, commented on the matter in an interview with CVG:

“It’s not something I feel I have any further announcement or comment to make on, other than to acknowledge with you that it’s a massively important issue and of course we are going to do the right thing.” – Sony Worldwide studios VP, Michael Denny

Still pretty cryptic but with a more positive slant. For now, what the next generation of consoles will determine about the fate of used games is still uncertain.
