Square Enix Gets To Use UE4 From Epic Games

Published On October 23, 2012 | By Brad Rose | News

Today is a good day if you’re a Square Enix fan, as Epic Games has given them full access to Unreal Engine 3 and 4, making the Japanese company the first publicly confirmed UE4 licensee. The agreement is apparently “long-term” and spans multiple games. In short, this is huge for Square.

“Epic has a strong relationship with Square Enix, and it’s an honor to provide their creative and technical talent with the best game technology available for licensing,” said Taka Kawasaki, Epic Games Japan territory manager. “We look forward to supporting their developers with world-class tools for years to come.”

Earlier this year Epic revealed Fortnite would be the first game to use Unreal’s new engine. It’s expected to launch next year, so it will be a while before we can truly see the power of the UE4 engine and what it can do for Square Enix.
