SNK Announces New Neo Geo Handheld Successor

Remember the old Neo Geo Pocket? The terrible flop from 1998? Well, the word is SNK’s trying to get back in the game now, with an all-new successor to that one. Sony and Nintendo may need to watch out on this one.

The device has been officially licensed already by SNK Playmore, and is currently going under the name placeholder of “Neo Geo Portable Device”. I wonder if we’re going to see SNK go the whole hog, and name it something completely new…

The device specs state the handheld has a 4.6 inch screen, 2GB of internal memory storage, and comes with 20 games built in, all of which are Neo Geo classics. Yay, a bit of retro to start off with.

1. World Heroes
2. Ultimate 11
3. Top Player’s Golf
4. Sengoku
5. Nam-1975
6. Mutation Nation
7. Last Resort
8. King of Monsters
9. Frenzy
10. Cyber Lip
11. Fatal Fury Special
12. Art of Fighting
13. Super Sidekicks
14. League Bowling
15. Metal Slug
16. Magical Lord
17. Baseball Stars Proffessional
18. Samurai Showdown
19. King of Fighters ’94
20. Fatal Fury

Not much to be excited about, but it’s definitely something to start off. I wonder what the more modern retail titles’ll come off looking like.

The device is 170 x 72 x 15mm, and uses a 2200mAh battery. It’s pretty much like… a slightly oversized iPhone. With buttons. The device controls include four face buttons, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons, a menu button, a start button, and control buttons for volume and brightness. Ports on the handheld include headphones, AV and an SD.

What do you think of the newly announced handheld? Another flop waiting to happen? Or could SNK really be back to hit the market?
