Rumour: Nintendo Considering Renaming The Wii U?
Ah, back to the old rumour mill. Or are we? Recent reports – well, rumours for now – state that Nintendo is venturing back to the boardroom to create a whole new tag for the Wii U. I don’t believe this is totally far-fetched, seeing as we still haven’t seen the final form of the Wii U yet, and especially seeing how critical the initial reception of the console name was when revealed at E3 last year.
Another major factor that may contribute to Nintendo’s alleged change of mind regarding this issue is the 3DS. Yes, the 3DS. As soon as the new handheld was released last year, and the whole mesmerisation of the graphics and new features had died down, many customers concluded to believe that the 3DS was really only an upgraded DS. It was perceived by a majority that Nintendo hadn’t really broken ground with it, as nice as it seemed to own one.
That, paired along with the bit about many fans outraging at the generic name of the upcoming Wii U, may be the two motivators to this whole conundrum, assuming it is true. Nintendo may be wanting to go for a whole fresh concept with this console, and not bring forth the idea in many gaming minds that this console is really only a Wii with fancy bunged-on features – an innovative Wii with fancy bunged-on features, but a Wii nonetheless. As we all know, Iwata and Miyamato in person have both previously stated that they want this new console to cater and appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers, the latter of which may need a bit more persuasion to yield interest. A console’s name is a very big factor when it comes to this.
I guess we’ll have to see the final conclusion at E3, and determine this with our own two eyes. Either way, keep it locked on Velocity Gamer for more upcoming info.
