ReveLAtions Finals: Skull Girls
The finals were moving along quite nicely with Skull Girls next in line. In this tournament, we saw many names that were specific to these types of fighters, i.e. anime fighters. Although there were some individuals who played everything, most of the time it was these competitors who played these types of games.
The Skull Girls format was a little bit different than the others. Normally, there are a set number of members on a team that does not change. It would either be a one-on-one fight, tag team, or a full three member team. But Skull Girls likes to change it up a bit and allow the competitor to choose how many fighters they would like to have on their team. It could range anywhere from one lone fighter to a team of three.
Below are the match-ups of the Skull Girls finals at ReveLAtions 2012.
First up was Jason D vs. Foo. Jason decided to go with a three-person team with Ms. Fortune, Parasoul, and Cerebella. Foo tried his luck with a tag team of Cerebella and Painwheel. Unfortunately for Foo, having that third person worked out in the advantage of Jason. His Cerebella assist was the key to his victory of the match.
Jason D was not done yet. Next, he had to face the Justin Wong. JWong followed in pursuit of Foo and went with a tag team, but his members were Valentine and Parasoul. The results for this match were not the same as the previous. It did not matter that Jason had an extra member on his team; Justin Wong still took the match. But don’t count Jason out just yet…
The third match of the finals pitted Fat Bird up against Foo from match one. Foo ran his same team against Fat Bird’s Peacock and Double. This time, lady luck was on Foo’s side, for he took the first round. Cornered, Fat Bird switched out Double for Parasoul and tried his luck again. But the lady has chosen her man and it was Foo for the second round and ultimately the match.
Foo had no time to rest. The next match pitted him against Grinta and his Filia and Cerebella team. Lady luck must have gotten bored with Foo in this match. She switched sides to Grinta and gave him the match, knocking Foo out of the competition. She can be really mean sometimes. After Foo, Grinta turned his sights on the familiar Jason D. Both used the same team and the rounds began. Unfortunately for Jason, he forgot to set his buttons prior to the match to his liking and that ended up costing him the round. But even with this snafu in the button scheme, he still was able to come right back and take the next four rounds and ultimately the match, even if he barely got by in round three.
The finals: Justin Wong vs. Jason D. They met again on the battle field, only now Jason D knew what to expect. The battle began…and it was very one sided. JWong was a very well rounded competitor and was able to take all three rounds, including a happy birthday in round three, and was crowned the champion of the Skull Girls tournament at ReveLAtions 2012.
It is amazing to see competitors be able to bounce around different games and play them so flawlessly. I sometimes wonder where they find the time to do this, but most players have made fighting game competitions a job of sorts. They would travel around to different states or even different countries, entering into tournaments, and battling against many different competitors of all shapes and sizes. It will be interesting to follow these players to see what they are up to.
