Music That Made you Feel Like a Total Badass

Published On July 7, 2012 | By Nick Calandra | Editorials

There’s a point in most action games nowadays where developers play a certain song to make you feel like you’re an unstoppable badass. You know, the part where as the moment is over, you either want to replay that segment or rush to your computer to find and download the music that was played. I’m here today to compile a list of those songs. This isn’t a top 5 list of any sorts, and they’re purely songs that I’ve really enjoyed. Spoilers may or may not be ahead.

Splinter Cell Conviction – The Truth

Splinter Cell Conviction has you trying to find the truth about Sam Fisher’s daughter and what really happened to her. She was believed to be in a car wreck that ended her life, but as the game progresses, you learn the truth about what really happened that fateful night. The music that plays following the cutscene leads to a section of the game where you know Sam isn’t going to let anything stop him, setting the tone perfectly. Take a look below.

Max Payne 3 – The Airport

During one of the final missions of Max Payne 3, you’ll find yourself fighting swarms of enemies at an airport, struggling to survive and find cover as they shoot at you from all directions. It can get ridiculously challenging, and Max’s bullet time is key to getting out of there. The music in the background pushed me forward, and even dying for the umpteenth time didn’t bother me. I mean, walking into an airport, in a suit with this music in the background? What could go wrong?

Assassin’s Creed 3 – Cinematic Trailer

Yes, this is technically trailer music, but the Assassin’s Creed III trailer is one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a video game in a long time. With this music in the background and the patriotic vision, it’s a perfect fit.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelation – Cinematic Trailer

What can I say? Ubisoft knows how to pick good music for their Assassin’s Creed trailers.

Mass Effect 3 – An End, Once and For All

Mass Effect 3 is undoubtedly one of the best games of the year, and will easily be nominated for many Game of the Year awards. The soundtrack is also top-notch with many tracks that set the mood for the end-of-the-world scenario. But, even in the wake of the destruction, this song made me feel like a badass in the end.

This will be one of the first entries in a series of editorials focusing on different emotions for music in video games. Let us know what your favorite “badass” song is!

So I just got to that level in Max Payne 3 as mentioned above. I do feel like a badass with that music playing, even more so than other levels.
